There is no difference as far as I've seen. I heard both "esposo" and "marido" while in Mexico.

"Mujer" is less respectful than "esposa." Think of "my woman" versus "my wife." I think esposo sounds more formal than marido although neither is disrespectful.

and if you want to be politically correct, say "compan~ero/a"

Same with esposa and mujer to say my wife you can say mi esposa or mi mujer but I feel more comfortable with mi esposa for one I find it easier to pronounce and when mi mujer is translated to my woman it doesn't seem a good way to refer to your wife although it is acceptable.
