¿Cómo se dice 'key or legend' en español?

I am trying to figure out what the Spanish equivalent for the word key or legend, like on a map. Does anyone know? I have looked all over and can't seem to find anything concrete. I found one site that indicated it might be cédula, but when I looked it up it seemed unlikely. Thank you for any help you can give.

Leyenda. (Del lat. legenda, n. pl. del gerundivo de leg?re, leer).

1. f. Texto que acompaña a un plano, a un grabado, a un cuadro, etc.

We actually use the word leyenda, Jsan, this is taken from the RAE.

I hope. And if anyone can point me in the direction of la leyenda de Spanishdict, I would appreciate it ... what do the occasional check marks mean?
