This clip was forwarded to me recently. In case you have not seen it yet, you may want to spare less than 2 minutes to view it. It's a brilliant idea and an amazing play with words.

Lost Generation

Lost Generation by Jonathan Reed

I am part of a lost generation and I refuse to believe that I can change the world I realize this may be a shock but “Happiness comes from within.” is a lie, and “Money will make me happy.” So in 30 years I will tell my children they are not the most important thing in my life My employer will know that I have my priorities straight because work is more important than family I tell you this Once upon a time Families stayed together but this will not be true in my era This is a quick fix society Experts tell me 30 years from now, I will be celebrating the 10th anniversary of my divorce I do not concede that I will live in a country of my own making In the future Environmental destruction will be the norm No longer can it be said that My peers and I care about this earth It will be evident that My generation is apathetic and lethargic It is foolish to presume that There is hope.

And all of this will come true unless we choose to reverse it .

I thought so too. Sharing it here in SD was the first thing that came to mind after I saw it. - Rikko, May 6, 2010

Very romantic and sweet, well done too. And yes I believe it is foolish to presume there is hope, unless of a giant miracle or a mega revolution (the good thing is that little by little it's getting in shape. People are getting fed up more and more every day.) However hippies tried to change the world quite a long time ago now. In fact we have to go back to 1920 to see a real change of big significance in society and to a lesser degree the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938. For those that forgot or never knew 1920 is when finally women obtained the right to vote. It "only" took 55 years of fight for the suffragettes to obtain it (1865-1920.) One of the arguments they had to fight was, "The suffragettes should not get to vote because they were too emotional and could not think as logically as men." I am rolling on the floor reading this one. I am sincerely convinced if the right woman was president[e] our country might not be in such a "crappy situation" as it is now. But let's face it we are in 2010, women still make less money than men and there is no feminine for the word "president"…ouch, so much for the change.

Jonathan Reed is right though, money doesn't make us happy…for the simple reason that we are getting less and less. The middle class is joining the lower class not in living but in surviving. We are robbed by banks and financial institutions; The average American pays 20 percent plus interest on their credit cards yet they are loading them as if it was ok. So no change there. Women used to be stay-home ladies to raise the family, now they have to sweat it just like men in order to barely round up the budget…yeepee yay for the improvement. On top try getting sick, pregnant or need often time-off to tender to your kids and you are taking the risk of not having a job anymore. No more income, no more money but hey, your job is not important, your family is…what a weird comparison. Jonathan is right to refuse even thinking that in 10 years he will be celebrating his divorce. In fact chances are he will be celebrating the 10 years of his second divorce. Why is that? Hum maybe it's due to the fast pace we are living, the pressure of not so simple life anymore, the stress (just look at the pharmaceutical industry in the U.S. If you have money to invest that is where you should place it.) Also the ease of getting divorced, it's not regarded as impossible (as in the old times), it's just a simple fact of life. And when is say it's easy I mean it's easy for women, for us guys it's when hell starts turning the burners on LOL. My advice is don't get married or don't get divorced. Jonathan is right again concerning the environment. His generation is going to save the world. Hey, better start now! The Exxon Valdes never crashed, Texaco never polluted Amazonia and the BP rig never exploded. Chernobyl nuclear plant never exploded, Bhopal carbide gas leak never happened. I did a little research on oil spills and found a list of the most important ones (not the only ones though), please sit down before seeing this: - 1967 Liberian tanker Torrey Canyon spills 120.000 ton oil near Cornwall - 1968 Witwater tanker spills 14.000 barrels of oil near Panama coast - 1969 tanker Hamilton trader spills 4.000 barrels of oil in Liverpool Bay, England - 1970 tanker Arrow spills 77.000 barrels of oil near Nova Scotia, Canada - 1971 tanker Wafra spills 20.000 barrels of oil near Cape Agulhas, Africa - 1972 tanker Sea Star catches fire after collision in Gulf of Mexico - 1974 Dutch tanker Metulla spills 53.000 ton crude oil near South-Chilli - 1976 Liberian tanker Argo Merchant spilled 29.000 square meters of oil near the Massachusetts coast - 1976 Spanish tanker Urquillo spills more than 100.000 ton oil near Spain - 1977 tanker Al Rawdatain spills 7.350 barrels of oil near Genoa, Italy - 1977 tanker Borug spills 213.692 barrels of oil near the coast of Taiwan - 1978 Brazilian Marina spills 73.600 barrels of oil near Sao Sebastiao, Brazil - 1979 Betegeuse spills 14.720 barrels of oil near Bantry Bay, Ireland - 1979 Ixtoc I exploratory well in Mexico blows out and spills 600.000 tons of oil - 1984 Alvenus tanker grounds southeast of Cameron, Louisiana and spills 65.000 barrels of oil - 1985 ARCO Anchorage spills 5.690 barrels of oil near the coast of Washington - 1986 unknown oil spill reaches the coast of Georgia and is later appointed to the Amazon Vulture tanker - 1989 Aragon tanker spills 175.000 barrels of oil near Madeira, Portugal - 1990 tanker American Trader grounds near Huntington Beach, California and spills 9458 barrels of oil - 1990 Cibro Savannah tanker catches fire and spills 481 square meters of oil - 1990 Jupiter tanker catches fire in Bay City, Mexico and causes oil spill - 1990 Mega Borg tanker catches fire and spills 19.000 square meters of oil near Galveston, Texas - 1991 tanker Bahia Paraiso spills 3.774 barrels of oil near Palmer Station, Antarctica - 1992 Greek tanker Aegean Sea spills 70.000 ton oil near Galicia - 1993 Bouchard B155 tanker spills 1.270 square meters of fuel oil after collision with 2 ships - 1996 Liberian tanker Sea Empress spills 147.000 ton oil near Wales - 1999 Maltese tanker Erika spills 30.000 ton oil near Brittany - 2001 tanker Jessica spills 900 ton oil near the Galapagos Isles - 2002 Bahamese Prestige spills oil near Galicia

So here is what I'm thinking…that's Jonathan's generation must be mighty powerful and the previous one was just a bunch of idiots, and so was the previous one, and so was the previous one, etc. I too was very powerful a long time ago when I was in my 20's then what happened…I entered life, the real life, not the dream. You have at some point to come to reality. For example you vote for a guy that you are sure is going to make some change then 2 things can happen. 1. He doesn't do what he promised he would do or 2. He can't do it because 1/2 the country is against him. You call that change? For how many decades now have governments pretended to work on new energies? 15 or 20 years ago General Motor made an electric car (to prove they were trying to help the environment.) This car was only leased to people. They liked it so much they tried to buy them at the end of the lease. GM recalled every single one of them and sent them all to be crushed and that was the end of the program. My short conclusion has it carries a lot of weight for 2 simple words: SWEET DREAMS!

Thanks Rikko, and for pointing out that I missed it! I was starting to feel sad, wondering if this is this what somebody truly believes - until it reversed!

Excellent.

The fact that SD has so much activity has a downside, in that it's easy to miss an excellent thread like this.

Quick update: everything is fine at the BP catastrophe site, nothing to be alarmed about, it's not getting worse, just still leaking 210,000 gallons a day. Everybody (in the government and BP) is optimistic and smiling; Nothing thus far has succeeded in properly handling the situation and solving any issue. Giant bells are lowered, tons of chemicals (with possible side effects) are dispersed and submarines are sent down with no positive results at all. What if it takes months to finally fixe the booboo? What if they just cannot fix it? At a rhythm of more than one million gallons of pollution per week the gulf of Mexico may very well become a dead sea, but don't be afraid, the industrials will find another place to extract the black poison. For the 1st time I got to see the film of the leak link text You might need to select National videos and find Giant Oil Plumes Found In Gulf Of Mexico
