Hello, and welcome to the forum. A lot of users here like to change their keyboards to Spanish or International or something, but I find the following much easier. One of our fellow SpanishDict users made a great application that deals with this. There's no installation or anything, but the only downside is that you have to run it again every time you restart your computer. but it's really not much trouble if you leave it in your 'Downloads' section. When you run it, all you have to do is hit the Windows key and the vowel you want to put the accent over, the n for ñ, or the q or x key for '¿' and '¡' respectively, like you would with the Shift key for writing a capital letter. Here's the link.

The reason I don't like the international keyboard option is that it has some side effects on the functionality of the single quotation mark ('), as I recall, but I'm not sure. If you do want to change your keyboard settings, though, it's pretty easy. In Windows 7, just click on "Change keyboards or other input methods" under "Clock, Language and Region." It should be pretty easy in other operating systems, too, but here's a link with instructions for how to do it in just about every operating system ever: http://www.studyspanish.com/accents/typing.htm They even tell you how to do it in Windows 3.1 in case you haven't changed computers since 1993.

Or, because you say you're just trying to do this in Microsoft Word, you can get the ñ from the symbols menu. In the newest version of Word, 'Symbol' is the last option on the 'Insert' tab.

Hi, I just learned these. The little squiggle line over the ñ has no name, and the tilde is the accent mark. I've just been using the keyboard codes, and I just about have them memorized; I googled a great site. Also, in MSWord, you can use insert and symbols to find them and it remembers the ones you use the most. I don't know about Windows. Good luck. grin

Hi, Nonib. This is not quite right. The thing over the ñ is called a tilde. The thing over vowels (á, etc.) is an (acute) accent. They are all diacritical marks. - MacFadden, May 6, 2010

Hi!

If you search the answers section for "special characters" you'll get tons of helpful info.
