Describing a photograph

When describing the contents of a photo is ser o estar used?

The contents of the photograph can't change but the emotions depicted in the image are (usually) fleeting.

"La fotografía es grave. O, la fotografía esta grave"?

I am trying to say the photograph is serious …

As you indicated, you are speaking of the photograph which won't change. I think that I would use "ser." smile

I concur with all your other answers, but for a different reason. I prefer the CID method for deciding between Ser and Esta; not on permanent/temporary basis. I think this is a matter of classification: this is a serious, rather than humorous, or informative, or artistic or other classification of photos. They all seem to be adjectives describing a type of photo, rather than a state of being like in focus, well lighted, well composed, etc.
