How to say shell

What's the best way to say shell, as in a protective shell that a person adopts in response to a series of harsh events? I know that "concha" means shell, but somehow that doesn't seem like the right usage...

I am not a native, but I would guess that "cascarón" would be the best fit.
I have heard the word "cascarón" used to describe an exoskeleton, the body of an automobile, a casket, and the "shell" people hide in when they can't deal with life.
Hopefully someone else will weigh in...
