Hello, and welcome to the forum. Little known fact: I did. Seriously. Look it up. It'll say right there in the dictionary entry for Spanish in the OED: "Language invented by MacFadden on May 4, 1997 with grammatical booby-trap called 'the subjunctive,' the rules for the usage of which the creator likes to change frequently and enforce erratically, so as to keep learners on their toes." Please spread the word, as I am not getting my proper due. I have a long-standing lawsuit against the RAE for copyright infringement, but it's not really going anywhere. wink

No one invented Spanish. Like other languages (except Esperanto) it evolved from previous ones. In the case of Spanish, it evolved from Vulgar Latin and is related to the other Romance languages. It was influenced by Arabic because Spain was occupied by Arabic-speakers in the Umayyad conquest. Spain was also invaded by Visigoths and some other Germanic groups. The influence of Cervantes' Don Quijote is also often mentioned in histories of Spanish. Wikipedia does some more in-depth explaining here.

Spanish evolved from colloquial, or "Vulgar Latin' (not to be confused with Latin profanity) originally brought to Spain by the Romans. Mixing this Latin with words from Arabic, Basque, Celtiberian, and additions from Germanic Languages, the Spanish language was created and has been developing/changing ever since (not in the sense that rules change, but that usages of certain things vary).

Hope that helps! Check out the wikipedia page for the History of the Spanish language
