My guess is that they don't use that expression, per se.

How about "Ser listo."

Steve is really on the ball....... Esteban es muy listo.

Are you asking how to say the english phrase "on the ball" in spanish? Or are you asking what does "on the ball" mean?

"on the ball" is an idiomatic rendering of "correctly focussed".

"Correctly focussed" = "bien centrado" o algo semejante.

Sadly I can't think of a corresponding Spanish idiom.
