I agree with Marianne but think of it this way.

Choose things you can point to or explain graphically or by acting. Maybe the biggest hazard in teaching language is to instil the idea that language is about one word's equivalence to another. What it's really about is enabling people of all ages to communicate in their preferred languages. The dictionary approach is only a tool to use in support of this.

As for children's vocabulary I'd start with parts of the body, school items, things at home, animals or things at the zoo, etc.
