Use of Imperfect to verify information

Can anyone give me the link where a detailed discussion is given about the use of the 'imperfect' use of a verb in such cases where a person is verifying if the other person is aware of any information (e.g. ¿Sabías que.....?) and or responding to a question that he/she has/don't have any idea about the question (e.g. Yo ya lo sabía/ No, no lo sabía).
