"Senderar" o "caminar"?

I just learnt that the Spanish word for "hiking" (noun) is senderismo, which is related to the verb "senderar" (to make or to walk a path).
But if you look up "hike" (verb) you get "caminar".
So when would you use "senderar"?

Your spelling is a little off.
senderear.
tr. Guiar o encaminar por el sendero.
tr. Abrir senda.
intr. Echar por caminos extraordinarios en el modo de obrar o discurrir.
