"make-up hours"

Question

How do you say "make-up hours", meaning hours that an employee missed and is now expected to make up by working later?

For example: I was scheduled to work 8am to 5pm, but did not work from 8am to 11am (3 hours). Now I owe 3 make-up hours.

Hello, Hannorah, welcome to the Forum! I can't think of a direct translation. I would use "reponer horas" or "horas por reponer", such as:

"Ahora tengo que reponer 3 horas" (Now I owe 3 make-up hours).

"Freddy tiene 5 horas por reponer". "Freddy tiene que reponer 3 horas." I don't know how much this might help you without knowing your level of Spanish...

The expression that we use in Spanish is "recuperar las horas". Using your example the correct way is "Yo tenía que trabajar de 8 de la mañana a 5 de la tarde, pero no vine de 8 a 11 (3 horas). Ahora tengo que recuperar esas 3 horas.

We would use "recuperar" when discussing a specific job that was first not completed and after was completed, but for making up work hours I would use Gekkosan´s suggestion - 005faa61, Aug 19, 2014
