¿A qué tal te refieres? To what (thing) are you referring? From the convent movie.

and then he said "¿A qué tal te refieres?" about the things in the dark. (monstruos!!!!!)

I don't speak like that, but it does sound like something one of my Mexican friends could say. So my take is that it is probably a regionalism, rather than something "wrong".

If it were my line of dialogue, I would say "¿A qué te refieres?", or "¿A qué cosa te refieres?".

So she must have said something like 'Did you hear that?' and he replied 'to what do you refer' - a qué tal te refieres...

So tal means thing? I still don't get tal there. - jeezzle, May 2, 2010
Well, I don't "get it", either - I have just come to accept it as the way some people speak in other countries. :-) In English I learn to ask "What do you mean?" But then I found that some people will say "Whatever do you mean?" - for example. - Gekkosan, May 2, 2010
It can and other things too, here is an example:nunca he hecho tal cosa 'I never did any such thing' and my idea is 'tal' is something that has already been mentioned... - margaretbl, May 3, 2010
