My favourite food
My mum always cooks at home. My favourite food is chicken. I sometimes eat chicken for lunch. My favourite fruit is orange. I like spaghetti with tomato sauce but I dont like tomatoes. And I like cakes and sweets but they are not good for your teeth.
Mi madre siempre cocina en casa. Mi comida favorita es el pollo. A veces, como pollo para almorzar. Mi fruta favorita es la naranja. Me gustan los espaguetis con salsa de tomate pero no me gustan los tomates. Y me gustan los pasteles y los dulces pero no son buenos para los dientes.

My mum always cooks at home. My favourite food is chicken. I sometimes eat chicken for lunch. My favourite fruit is an orange. (or "are oranges) I like spaghetti with tomato sauce but I dont like tomatoes. I also like cakes and sweets but they are not good for your teeth.
Orange is a countable noun and it needs something such as "an orange" or "oranges."
It is slightly improper to start a sentence with "and," so I changed it to "I also."
For that reason, I cannot understand why Nicole said that "my favourite fruit are oranges" is not correct and "oranges are my favourite food" is correct.
"My favorite fruit are oranges." is grammatically incorrect. The verb, in this case "are", needs to agree with the subject which is "fruit". Fruit (the subject) is singular not plural, so the verb should be "is". "My favorite fruit is oranges." is correct, but sounds awkward to English speakers. It is a common mistake to assume that the verb "is" has to agree with the word "oranges", even though it is not the subject in this case. Nicole made the subject sound smooth to her by making "oranges" the subject in her grammatically correct sentence. "Oranges are my favorite food." As you can see, Nicole's sentence structure replaces the subject, "fruit" (which is singular and needs the verb "is") with "oranges" (which is plural and needs the verb "are").
As an English speaker I would choose to word the sentence this way:
"My favorite fruit is the orange."
This is perfectly grammatically correct as well as corrects the awkwardness a native speaker hears in the sentence "My favorite fruit is oranges."
This looks great Nila for the most part. There are just two things:
My favourite fruit is orange.
In English, we would probably say "Oranges are my favorite fruit." or "My favorite fruit is an orange." (The second version is probably closer.)
Y me gustan los pasteles y los dulces pero no son buenos para los dientes.
In English, it used to be frowned upon to start a sentence with the words "But" or "And". I have heard that "but" is now acceptable, but I still think that you shouldn't start a sentence with "and".
"Also, I like cakes and sweets, but they are not good for your teeth."
Although, if you must make this a word for word translation, keep the "and" at the beginning.
I hope this helps!!
My favourite fruit is an orange
My favourite fruit is the orange
Oranges are my favourite fruit
These three sentences sound as if they were more similar to our usages of Spanish. They are more understandable for me.
Mi comida favourita favorita es el pollo frito
You ask which fruit I like ,well, of all the different fruits that there are I prefer the orange.
I find my Asian friends have trouble with fruit and fruits, they will say when referring to a bowl full of fruit ," would you like some fruits " ? How many fruits is in the bowl ? Or , how many different fruits are there? Not a very fruitful argument. Actually I just love Mangoes ,fresh or cooked I inhale them.
My favourite fruit is an orange. (or "are oranges)
My favourite fruit are oranges
We say:
Mi fruta favorita es la naranja
Mi fruta favorita son las naranjas
Also, we can say:
Mi fruta favorita es una naranja (as you use to saying)
Las naranjas son mi fruta favorita (as you use to saying)
For that reason, I cannot understand why Nicole said that "my favourite fruit are oranges" is not correct and "oranges are my favourite food" is correct.
If I could find a source my favorite food would be Chilean locos. Abalones from California are not the same. In the meantime I find it hard to beat a properly cooked steak (beef that is).
