Maybe he actually said "cup cake". It's just an expression of affection.

My ex called me " baby cakes " ( I hear you laughing ),it just means he loves you. I wish I had someone to love me !

I guess you'll have to ask him! I've been called "Sweetie Pie" before but never "cake."
