What does "Mendega" mean?

Ive heard this word many, many times, but I havent been able to find anyone who could translate it for me (Ive asked my husband, but he doesnt know how to say it in English). I appologise for not being able to spell it correctly, but I will do my best. The word is "mendega" (sounds like men-dee-gah). Ive heard one person say that it meant the equivalent of jacka** in English, but I really have no clue if thats right or not. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!!

Mendigo or mendiga is begger or coward.

One of my dictionaries says "idot" for mendigo (male) or mediga (female).
