Verb + Preposition + Noun = Use article or not?

Question

I have a phrase with a verb then a preposition then a noun. The noun however has no article.

montar en bicicleta

I know what each word means, I researched articles, read other answers, but can not figure out why the article is not used here. Is there a rule regarding this? Such as 'after a preposition the article is not used'. Is there such a rule?

There are some rules, but in this situation "montar en bicicleta" is an expression such as "tener frío" which is translated to be cold, and they simply are learned as such.

montar en bicicleta

This means "to ride (on) a bicycle"

or simply "cycling"

yes, you do still put the "la" or "una" (i'm pretty sure) i dont think there is a rule about not using a preposition. But i could be wrong
