Pensar en mi vs. Pensarme

Hi.

I was wondering about the difference between saying:

"Gracias por pensar en mi" and "Gracias por pensarme."

I'm not sure if the difference is just cultural, or if one means "thanks for thinking ABOUT me" and the other "thanks for thinking TO me" -- > which in English would mean roughly the same thing, but perhaps not in Spanish.

"Gracias por pensarme" is incorrect.

"Gracias por pensar en mi" is correct.

¿Gracias por pensarme?. What do you mean?. That does not exist.

Thanks for your help. I've heard (here in the Los Angeles area) "gracias por pensarme" to mean "thanks for thinking of me". A friend recently corrected me and said it's correct but it should be "gracias por pensar en mi."
