I just heard this in a show, to mean you have to understand. I would have said tienes que entenderlo. Can it ever be used like this, or are they taking liberties? Gracias.

"Tienes entenderlo" is not correct. You have it right: "Tienes que entenderlo". It's such a basic mistake, that either you must have misheard, or whoever said it cannot have been a native speaker.
