What is an empanada?

I know they are a pastry. I made apple empanadas last weekend and they are delicious (taste almost like apple pie tongue laugh). But I would like to know if there is an English word for empanada. Thanks!

I think it's traditionally a meat 'pie', but obviously you can fill them with whatever you want. I think the closest word to it in 'English' would be pie despite how they look. However, I do believe that people would just call them Empanadas in English.

There's as great a variety of empanadas as there are of sandwiches and pizzas. They can be made out of all sorts of dough, including maize, wheat, and plantain, and they can be filled with just about anything. Here are a few samples:

You're making me hungry. I haven't had a good empanada since I left South America so many years ago. - KevinB, Apr 26, 2010

I should have thought it obvious that an empanada is a "pasty" or just conceivably a "turnover'. It's folded over ain't it, not sealed with a top on it like a pie nor open at the top like a tart.

Wherever did you folk learn your English; it certainly wasn't in Cornwall, the home of the pasty.

They look really tasty or to borrow a word from the eatery in Viella maybe I should just say "ñam ñam".

Yes, it's traditionally a meat pie, but I've seen them with fruit filling, like banana, too. They're meant to be held and eaten like a sandwich. Very tasty.

I suppose the closest you can get is the generic English word a "pastry" or a "tart". This kind of thing link text By the way I don't read the Daily Mail!

I have seen them called "turnovers"; which generally fits the bill. - Gekkosan, Apr 26, 2010
