I want to describe someone accidentally cutting their hand off, and i'm not sure if 'me corté la mano' is completely correct. so i'm wondering... is there an idiomatic phrase for cutting something off???

Hola, deets...what an interesting question. You are correct in that "cortarse" is used for one's body, but it usually implies a more normal situation - "I cut my hand", not "I cut my hand off".

Have you considered the term "amputarse"? When you think about it, if a person cuts his hand off, in effect, he amputated it. "Me amputé la mano sin querer".
