How to say different 'strains' of crops?

I'm creating a presentation about overfarming, and have run into a bit of a problem trying to correctly word one of my solutions. So, I need your help smile How would I go about saying "It's important to interbreed different strains of crops"? I did use a translator but I'd like some human input to make sure there was nothing misinterpreted by the translator smile ¡Muchas gracias!

The dictionary on this site gives la variedad for 'strain' in the plant sense. So, your whole phrase would be Hace falta cruzarse variedades diferentes de cultivos. Or maybe Hace falta cruzarse diferentes variedades de cultivos. I'm not sure about adjective placement in this particular context.
