Educado - Polite vs educated

Educado - Polite vs educated

Bien educado = well educated. Educado = Polite. Mal Educado = Poor mannered.

Is this all right? How weird, my course says educado for educated and the dictionary doesn't list it that way at all.

Creo que maleducado es una sola palabra. - ocbizlaw, Sep 12, 2014

Well educated and polite used to be synonymous. Proper comportment was part of the curriculum especially in "finishing" schools.

Yes, that is right, as odd as it might seem. Culto is the word used to describe a person with a good school education.

In Mexico I said "él es muy cortés" (he is very polite) and I was corrected to say "él es bien educado."

I guess being well educated does not mean one is therefore polite.

For me "polite" is "cortéz" and "well educated" is "educado or culto" smile

For this reason, I personally prefer cortés over educado when I mean "polite." That may not be a good idea, though.

I have heard culto but didn't know "Bien educado" could mean well educated.
