Do I use u or o

I just found myself thinking "u" but writing "o".
Please can y'all give me a clue as to why.

Hello,
If the second word starts with "o", use "u"...
...u otros objetos.
Like substituting the "y" with "e".

Others examples:
"es una cosa u otra". Right!
"es una cosa o otra". Wrong!
"....importaciones y exportaciones". Right!
"....exportaciones y importaciones". Wrong!
"....exportaciones e importaciones". Right!
