Meaning of "Desgranar"

In all the dictionaries I have looked in (including spanishdict) desgranar means to thresh, shell, sort etc. However I am reading a book written in spanish in which "desgranar" is used to refer to a period of time: "desgranaban los días" "desgranaba nocturnos". can anyone tell me what it means in this context? I think the author is from Barcelona, if that helps at all.

Hey, oh fellow lizard!

If you think about it, the metaphor makes sense. When you thresh corn, particularly by hand, you are removing the individual kernels and dropping them on a bowl or basket. Now get hold of a month,or a year, and start pulling the days off, letting them drop in a bowl... Tick-tick-tick..tick...tick-tick... can you see it?
