What are all the English small words in Spanish?

Sometimes I´m trying to say something that I´m thinking in Spanish and the only hindrance is all of those small words that make the sentence complete. What are the Spanish words for; like, as, if, but, and all of those that I can´t even think of especialmente? (I don´t know what you call them in English. I´m sure there is a special gramatical word for them.) oh oh

Could be "conjunctions" right? - ian-hill, Apr 21, 2010
Maybe not... I can´t think of them now...They come up when I´m trying to write or say what´s on my mind. - 007d3a4d, Apr 21, 2010

Your profile says you are 'Advanced' in Spanish. If this is so, how is it that you don't know the "small words"? ¡Estoy confundido!

The ones I gave as an example I do know already. I just can´t think of the ones I don´t know and hoped someone would suggest them. - 007d3a4d, Apr 21, 2010

There are conjunctions which are words that link words, phrases, or clauses. These words are words like "but, and, after, if, because, etc." Words like a/an are called articles which are kinds of adjectives which are always used with and gives some information about a noun. My English teacher in school used to say when you see these words think "NOUN COMING". smile Hope this helps a little.

Thanks. The ones that I really do not know very well I couldn´t think of in English... I´ll be back to ask more specifically about them when I remember them. - 007d3a4d, Apr 21, 2010

Some of the most common 'little words', you will use these all the time if you are speaking Spanish.

  • de = of, from
  • él = he
  • el, la, los, las = the
  • ella, ellas = she/they(female)
  • ellos = they (all male or mixed gender)
  • en = in
  • tú = you (familiar)
  • un, uno, una = a, an, one
  • unos, unas = some, few
  • usted = you (formal, singular)
  • ustedes = (you, formal, plural)
  • yo = I

You have got to have these in your vocabulary.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Some of those little words are prepositions, e.g., in, on, of, for, from, etc. Here's a lesson from our Reference section on that subject.
