How do you translate "By the time"

How would you translate this sentence? "By the time he was 20 he was already a successful leader." I don't want to say "Cuando tenía 20 años..." I am looking for a way to say "by the time".

"A los 20 años de edad ya era un líder exitoso" (my preference)
"Para cuando cumplió los 20 años, ya era un líder exitoso" (closer to a literal translation - "By the time" - "para cuando").
