I've always heard that as "de donde vives" so "por donde vives" sounds strange to me.
Rikko, you can hear, ¿de dónde eres? not vives.
Por dónde or dónde vives is the correct form.

OMG, you're right! It's "de donde eres" that I know. It's just that "por donde vives" sounded strange to me that I got it them mixed up. So, when do ask "por donde vives"? - Rikko, Apr 19, 2010

I was curious myself. Por aquí means "over here" according to our dictionary so I thought Por dónde might also have some idiomatic meaning. If you google it, you'll find it used. - 0074b507, Apr 19, 2010
