Which is grammatically correct if I want to say, "The grandparents decided to leave/say goodbye."

1) "Los abuelos decidieron a despedirse."

OR

2) "Los abuelos decidieron despedirse."

If both are correct, what is the difference between the two variations?

Remember, English is not translating the way is written. The number 1, is not correct. The number 2 maybe, But the way you wrote your sentence is not correct either. It should be: "The grandparents decided to leave, saying goodbye". I hope this help you, thank you.Have a nice day.
