I know that "pedir prestado" means "to borrow something" but I'm not sure exactly what this sentences is saying with its use of prestada.

"Cuando yo estoy en el colegio siempre pido ropa prestada a mis amigos porque tengo frio."

Is it saying "...I always ask for borrowed clothing..."

or "...I always ask for loaned clothing..."

I'm very confused. I'm thinking this may be something that doesn't translate to English literally!

Think of the phrase "to ask for the loan of ...". This is a reasonable expression in English although "borrow" (being shorter) is more common.

No it doesn't translate word for word to a point. It is saying, "When I am in/at school I'm always borrowing clothes from my friends because I'm cold. Hope this helps. smile

It's almost like the friends are providing clothes for this person because she is cold. smile
