Is it okay to refer to Mr. Ramirez-Herrera using a shortened form of his name?

Would it be acceptable to say Mr. Herrera, at any time?

In Spanish, hyphenated last names are generally not used. I am guessing that the name in question is Sr. Ramirez Herrera. Ramirez would be his father's sirname and Herrera his mother's. Most people use just the father's sirname in general conversation and the complete sirname on legal documents. So in this case, it should be OK to call him Sr. Ramirez.
