Why is "ahí" used instead of "aquí" in "Espéreme ahí" for Wait "for me here"?

Sherrera's question prompts me to ask one I've been wondering about concerning aca, aqui and ahi, alli.
The first pair mean here, the second there.
Are there rules about which of the pair to use?
( I don't know if I should start a new thread but it's so close to Sherrera's question I I hope it's okay.)
