They are often blown out of proportion by the media.
I would specifically like to know how to translate 'to blow something out of proportion'

My big paper dictionary suggest the following translation:
lo se ha exagerado mucho = it has been greatly exaggerated
Not exactly an idiom for idiom translation but the best I could find.

"to blow something out of proportion (to make a mountain out of a molehill)" = "hacer una montaña de un grano de arena" (literally, "to make a mountain out of one grain of sand")
Según el Gran Diccionario Oxford, (En España): Sacar las cosas de quicio = to blow things out of proportions

Sometimes idiomatic expressions cannot be translated word for word. I spend a lot of time studying phrases because of my daily thread, and although I am not a native or claim to know everything (in fact I know quite little) I can say with confidence that the expression I gave you, "hacer una montaña de un grano de arena", is the correct equivalent to: "to blow something out of proportion" This does not exclude the chance that there may be another phrase in existence that could be used interchangeably with the one I have given...but all told you can be confident my phrase is accurate. Look it up. Idiomatic expressions do not always translate understandably to English-speakers sensibilities so remember to keep your minds open to unusual phrases!
I like exagerado as I've never met a corresponding idiom either. How about "totalmente exagerado"?
