In some Hispanic countries a female police officer is called "La policía." In most Spanish-speaking countries, however, "La policía" refers to the police in general. "Voy a llamar a la policía." (I am going to call the police.)

Notice above that after a form of the verb "ser" you don't use an article in front of the profession. El bombero es muy guapo. Felipe es bombero. La ingeniera es simpática. Sarita es ingeniera.

However, when you follow the noun of profession with an adjective of description, then you need to use an article in front of it. In other words, when you describe someone, using their profession, you have to use the word "the" or "a" or "an." Roberto es policía. Roberto es un policía inteligente. Felisa es profesora. Felisa es una profesora simpática. Or: Carmen y María son las enfermeras morenas. Nosotros somos los secretarios buenos.

32 is treinta y dos. 44 is cuarenta y cuatro.

The "y" stays in the same place when we add hundreds. For example:

132 is ciento treinta y dos.

444 is cuatrocientos cuarenta y cuatro.

What is 353? ¡Sí! ¡Eso es! Trescientos cincuenta y tres. And 865? ¡Fantástico! Ochocientos sesenta y cinco. What about 706? If you said "setecientos seis" you are right! (There is nothing in the tens place so we do not need the "y.")

For 2000 and higher, we simply put the number for how many thousand in front of mil. For example:

2000 = dos mil

80.000*= ochenta mil

(*Nota: Where numbers are concerned, the Spanish speakers use a decimal point where we use commas. They use commas where we use decimal points. Notice the decimal point above.)
