Question from DELE;

– ¿Has escrito a tu sobrina? – Todas las semanas sin falta. Es que __________ echo mucho de menos. a) lo b) le c) la d) se

I thought it's B. "I sent her" But right answer is C(la). Why ?

And what does exactly mean the last sentence; "Es que __________ echo mucho de menos." ?

Es que ____LA______ echo mucho de menos.

The "la" stands in the place of "her."

"Echo de menos" is a phrase used in Spain to mean "miss" as in "I miss you."

So here is your sentence broken down:

Es que = It's that

La = her

Echo mucho de menos = I miss her a lot

Please post another comment if you have more questions because this is a complicated subject.

"Echo de menos" is used in Spain and some other countries. "Te extraño" (I miss you) is used in Latin America (Mexico, etc.) - --Mariana--, Apr 13, 2010

LA is the direct object pronoun.

LE is the indirect object pronoun.

Example of a direct object and indirect object pronoun in English: Give the book to him. "The book" is the direct object that receives the action of the verb "to give". "Him" in this example is an indirect object. It is not receiving the action of the verb directly.

In your example "Es que la echo mucho de menos", she is directly receiving the action of the verb. She is being missed. So you use la, the d.o.p.

Es que _____la_____ echo mucho de menos

I miss her a lot.

In Spain we often use "le" here, which is called leismo, an accepted incorrect use of the indirect pronoun when it has to be the direct la , like i n this case.
