A rather specific question based on Argentine Spanish

I remember when I was in Argentina that people would call license plates "patentes". My question is this, if a license plate is a patente, what is a patent for an invention? Would you understand the difference based solely on context?

Yes, "patente" is both, and you figure the meaning only based in context. If the context is not clear enough, you will usually ask questions to make it clear.

It is not the only word with multiple meanings, although this one is regional. For example, "tomar": to drink, and "tomar": to get. Same situation.
