Its always been strange to me (anybody else?)........el mapa .... la mano,,,¡buenos días!

Are these considered exceptions in Spanish? Do we treat these like irregular verbs in the preterit and just memorize them?

If you have not previously read the Reference Page on genders, this might be a good time to review it, while the gender of words is on your mind.

Look here ----> Gender of Nouns

My favorite is 'el vestido'. while it is not irregular in the same way as 'la radio', it seems much more unusual to me. Why are dresses masculino?
If I was to guess I would believe that it would have something to do with 'vestir' to dress and '-ido' as the participle. But still a dress is masculine?!?!?!?, jajajajaja, who comes up with this stuff?

There are two radios: la radio (music station), el radio (Marie Curie) . - 00e46f15, Apr 12, 2010
grammatical gender != natural gender (sex). also it's "la corbata". - samdie, Apr 12, 2010
