How do you say "It would be.."

As in "It wouldn't be so cold if you'd fixed the window" for example.

it would be = sería

it wouldn't be = no sería

Depending on the circumstances, you need to interchange the verb estar in the appropriate context...

it would be = estaría

it wouldn't be = no estaría

Let me add my thoughts, since you have given us a specific sentence.

I believe in this case you want to use a form of "entrar", because so much cold air would not enter or come in if the window were fixed.

The general formula is: conditional + if + past subjunctive.

Therefore: No entraría tanto frío si hubieras arreglado la ventana.

I think after I would (conditional present) and after if (subjunctive imperfect)

It wouldn't be so cold if you'd fixed the window

No estaría tan frío si fijaras la ventana.

This is a situation in which the use of the subjunctive is necessary. However, I'm not certain how to respond to your question as the example you used wouldn't utilize the verb "to be" in Spanish, but rather, the verb "to make."

One way to say the sentence you've given as an example would be: no hiciera tan frío si hubieras arreglado la ventana.

Since there are two forms of the verb "to be" in Spanish (estar and ser), more information is necessary to determine which you would want to use in a sentence.

it would be (estar): estuivera it would be (ser): fuera

this could be entirely wrong. perhaps, the conditional should be used here? i always get them confused. - hithere3387, Apr 11, 2010
