Well, it took some poking around in Spanish on the internet, but he died of chronic renal disease. I certainly learned a lot about this guy during my research!

I searched and could not find anything listing his cause of death. Everything I saw says:
Alex Carrasquel died in Caracas, Venezuela at age 57.
