La palabra "ente"

Question

I know that this word is a synonym of "ser". I used it in a poem and nobody knew what it meant. They all thought that I had misspelled it and it was supposed to be "mente" or "entre".

I ended up changing it to "ser", but here is the line- sepultada en la profundidad de mi ser.

Personally I like the way ente sounds, but ser is more understandable.

Has anyone heard of this word? As I can see already, it is not commonly used.

Actually I just learned that word today... thought it sounded nice... but mostly everyone I have spoke with never even heard of it. I figured I´d use it, but I have a writer friendl, I asked if I should use ser or ente, and he said ser. - NikkiLR, Apr 10, 2010

La definición en mi "Diccionario Práctico" (Grijalbo) reza: "en el lenguaje de la ontología clásica, 'ser', en su sentido más general puede ser real, ideal o de razón; actual o potencial, finito o infinito, etc."

The definition in the bilingual Wordswoth is "being" ; the definition in the bilingual Harper Collins is "entity" or "being".

You are correct that it is not commonly used in regards to a human "being", unless it is used in a mocking way. All 3 dictionaries note that it is used to refer to a "ridiculous person". It is also used to refer to an organization, as the Grijalbo goes on to explain: "nombre de determinados organismos estatales."

I really do like that line in your poem, even though you are disappointed in the change to "ser".
