Did you mean to say the difference between "tardar" and "durar?" - --Mariana--, Apr 9, 2010

I second Marianne´s comment. I think you mean "tardar" y "durar". You might as well also throw in "demorar" and "tomar".

in that case, both terms can often be used interchangeably. However, "durar" means "to last", and "tardar" means "to take" as in time.

So, "cuánto dura el viaje" means "how long does the trip last"

"Cuánto tarda el viaje" means "how long does the trip take".

"Cuánto demora el viaje" and "cuánto toma el viaje" are other options with roughly the same interpretation.

  • tardar = it takes
  • durante = meanwhile
  • durar = to last

Examples

  • ¿cuánto tiempo tarda el viaje?
  • ¿cuánto dura el viaje?
  • ¿cuánto tiempo se toma el viaje?
