reflexive or not?

We're in a unit on subjunctive tense with emotions. Our book does not clarify some of the reflexive verbs very well that are used for emotion--alegrarse, sorprenderse, preocuparse. Can someone tell me when to use "Me alegro" and when to use "Me alegra"? We've looked at several samples and it isn't clear when to use which one for "Me sorprendo" and "Me preocupo" or "Me sorprenda" and "Me preocupa" It seems to be almost interchangeable, so I'm not sure how to best explain it to my students.

Would it be possible to see some of the examples that you were given in the book?

I understand the use of the subjunctive in the first sentence, but not in the second! If you get an answer, i'd like to know. - Delores--Lindsey, Apr 10, 2010
Ah! Alegrase is a verb of emotion, and these require the subjunctive. What was I thinking? :-) - Delores--Lindsey, Apr 26, 2010
