préterito perfecto [compuesto] literally means past perfect, but it is a bit of a misnomer as it refers to the English Present Perfect tense (present tense of haber+past participle). The Past Perfect is Spanish is the pluscuamperfecto (the imperfect of haber + past participle) or the pretérito anterior (the preterite of haber+past participle).

He explicado los nombres de los tiempos del verbo español.

He explicado is pretérito perfecto [compuesto]

**the preterite (past tense) is the pretérito perfecto [simple]
