Can someone please explain the following phrase?

"Tres hijos tenía, tres de diferentes pelajes, y no le daban sus hormas espacio para acariciar al primero, el auténtico"

I don't understand the relationship between pelahes & hormas espacio para acariciar...

Thanks!!

This is from a short story titled "Jealousy" by Robert J Payró. The story is about a shoemaker who was cuckolded by his wife. I suspect then that the three children were all by different fathers.

Perhaps the shoemaker was father to the first of them. Again, perhaps the reference is to the children of three different skins (appearances) not being comparable to the original mold (the 1st child). Or, maybe I'm wrong.

Like you, I found the sentence defied my immature Spanish and I came away from it more with an understanding based on the rest of the story than an understanding of the sentence on on its own.
