La primera refers to something feminine.

La primera chica en la linea es mi hermana. The first girl in line is my sister.

El primero would refer to something masculine.

However, when placed before a noun, it is shortened.

El primer libro que leí.... The first book that I read.....

Hi, Drummer

Primero is an adjective, and like most adjectives in Spanish, it agrees in number and gender with the noun or pronoun it modifies. In other words, like Sunshinzmommie said, it changes depending on its use.

"The first word" would translate to Spanish as "La primera palabra"; "The first book" would be "El primer libro". If you're talking about a stack of books and you want to reference the first one, without using the word "book", you could say "el primero".

I hope that helps. If not, just let us know and we'll try to explain in a different way.

It depends on the noun/pronoun he(él) = el primero..she (ella) = la primera

Ella fue la primera a llegar.

Él fue el primero a llegar.

I think that it depends on the surrounding text.
