Los estudiantes leen las lecciones. The students read the lessons.

It doesn't matter if they are both female and male. but if they are all female then use

Las estudiantes leen las lecciones.

No!!! the gender of the readers is irrelevant!. "las lecciónes" is feminine and that is the direct object to which the pronoun refers. - samdie, Apr 7, 2010
Los/las estudiantes is another question, altogeather. - samdie, Apr 7, 2010
