Tengo que traducir la oración de arriba. No sé lo que significa "íes." ¿Alguien sabe? Creo que la oración significa en inglés algo como: My professor marked my paper up with errors.

Cualquiera sugerencia es bienvenida.

Gracias,

Kerri

I was curious about Bunbury's affirmation, so I decided to check it out further.

Seems like there are two widely accepted meanings for this expression.

The one closer to my understanding is that it means to "clarify something, to make dispel all doubt about something". There is a nice explanation supporting that on this link.

Clearly a number of people on the Internet understand the expression as Bunbury stated it. I won't contest it, but that is not the way I have ever used or hear that expression used.

Literally the expression means "to place the dots on the "i's" (the letter i). If you notice, the letter I has a small dot on top.

"Poner los puntos sobre la ies" means to me to finish something up, to polish it up to stisfactory completion. A sentence is not quite complete until you have placed the dots over all the i's.

Yo no lo entiendo así. Yo o entiendo como completar algo. - Gekkosan, Apr 4, 2010
Francamente, Bunbury, ese tipo de respuesta raya en lo grosero. Yo respeto tu opinión, al punto que me tomé el trabajo de confirmad de dónde sacaste esa interpretación. No me sobra la arrogancia para determinar que estás hablando de lo que no sabes. - Gekkosan, Apr 4, 2010

We have exactly that same expression in French and that is pretty much what it means - to put someone in their place.
