Is "error" really the best word for mistake? Bueno, fue un error just doesn't sound right to me. Gracias de antemano.

I'm not sure how to translate that whole sentence but "error" is certainly a normal way to say mistake.

Cometí un error = I made a mistake.

Me equivoqué = I made a mistake./I was wrong.

Fue un error = It was a mistake.

in Spanish you cometer un error not hacer un error :) - 003487d6, Apr 4, 2010
thanks, dandi, now that you mention, I have heard that - alba3, Apr 4, 2010
A bit like English with "make a mistake and commit a sin" maybe. - ian-hill, Apr 5, 2010

Una falta or una equivocación could be substituted for error.

What about this: "Dude, dating your sister was a mistake, I really miss our friendship and I'm sorry that I threw it all away just for a few foolish moments. I wish I could take it all back, but I know that words can't fill the void."

It seems like every other word out of my mouth is a poem or an idiom.

If I were trying to say something like: "Dude, dating your sister was a mistake, I really miss our friendship and I'm sorry that I threw it all away just for a few foolish moments. I wish I could take it all back, but I know that words can't fill the void." I'd have to be a little less poetic about it and say:

which basicly says: Going out with your sister was a mistake. I was wrong and I really miss our friendship. I'm sorry that I threw it away by doing something foolish. I regret it but I know that words can't fix anything.

Hopefully a native speaker will come along with a more accurate translation.

Jeezzle, I think "error" fits best in your sentence for "mistake."

That was my shot Jeezle but it probably sounds funny to a native speaker. It was fun to try though! Eres un poeta jeje
