esto y eso are the neuter forms of este y ese.

You would use them when referring to concepts or ideas which of course have no gender.

My understanding is when an object is reflected on like in "ese hombre" then it's ese. When it's just a general statement "No me gusta eso" then it's eso. Same with este and esto.

What if what you don't like I S masculine? - ian-hill, Mar 29, 2010
No me gusta ese hombre. A mi no me gusta ese chico. If it refers to an object then it's ese. No reference is the general eso, Eso is like "the thing" No me gusta eso. - jeezzle, Mar 29, 2010
