Ama de llaves

I have read the expressions 'ama de llaves' and 'ama de casa' today, and both times they were referring to a woman, but using 'el'... is this correct? Do they both always take the masculine form? Is there a reason for this?

Thank you in advance!

It is for the same reason that you say "el agua" or "el águila".

"La ama" sounds awkward.

There are several threads about the subject in this forum. Like this one, for example.

Thank you... I never realised this could apply to a person!
